Tour description: The guided tour of Spoleto will unveil a captivating village in the heart of Italy, a jewel rich in art and monuments of various styles, from Roman to medieval constructions, and the Lombard and papal dominations. The name of Spoleto is also renowned for the historic Festival dei Due Mondi and the TV series Don Matteo.
The journey begins at the Arch of Drusus, dedicated to the sons of the Roman emperor Tiberius, built in 23 AD with stone blocks as the triumphal entrance to the ancient Roman city. We then pass by the still-functioning Roman Theater, adjacent to the National Archaeological Museum. While strolling through the alleys of a classic medieval village, we can admire one of the most beautiful squares in the historic center, Piazza del Mercato, surrounded by bars, restaurants, and gourmet shops offering typical Umbrian products.
The tour continues to the beautiful staircase, offering a breathtaking view of the Spoleto Cathedral, making it a symbol of the city.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta reveals its splendor with a mosaic-covered façade, two rows of rosettes, a marvelous Renaissance portico, and a bell tower on one side of the church. We visit the interior to admire the frescoes by Filippo Lippi and Pinturicchio in the embellished chapels.
Using convenient escalators, we reach one of the highest points in Spoleto, where we admire the Mascherone Fountain, an iconic 17th-century stone fountain with feline features, paying homage to Pope Clement XII, who restored the ancient aqueduct.
The tour continues with an external visit to the imposing Rocca Albornoziana, built on Colle Sant’Elia in the 14th century by the powerful Spanish cardinal Albornoz on behalf of the Pope.
This fortress, strategically positioned, dominates the entire valley and was also used as a palace to host pontifical governors and illustrious figures. The guided tour concludes with a view from the Rocca of one of Spoleto’s most beautiful bridges, the majestic Ponte delle Torri, originally an ancient Roman aqueduct, entirely made of limestone and towering 80 meters high.
