MODICA private tour: the chocolate town in Sicily

The guided tour of Modica will surprise you with the beauty of the town on two levels, Modica Alta and Modica Bassa, both rich in authentic late Baroque jewels, suggestive views and many typical sweets to be discovered. We start from the Cathedral of San Giorgio in the upper part of the town, one of the most representative symbols of Sicilian Baroque and of Modica itself which is presented in all its splendor being preceded by a sumptuous staircase of 254 steps enriched by hanging gardens with bougainvillea and jasmine . We will visit the church of the ‘700 from the facade that at sunset takes on an amber color and where inside, in addition to the sundial, is kept the Holy Ark, the relics of San Giorgio, and is embellished with stuccos and valuable works of art.

Walking through the alleys you can see breathtaking views of the lower part of the town that looks like a nativity scene and looks like another Italian town: Matera. Between narrow streets and stairways, looking upwards, we can see the remains of the castle of the Counts, a medieval castle perched on top of the rock with the beautiful Clock Tower, built on the remains of a watchtower and placed near the walls of the Castle. Walking towards Modica Bassa we find the birthplace of the Sicilian writer Salvatore Quasimodo, Nobel Prize for literature, transformed into a museum.

The tour continues to discover the historic center of Modica Bassa, whose symbol is the Cathedral of San Pietro, the second cathedral of the town. The church is another magnificent late Baroque style monument made even more impressive by the staircase accompanied by the statues of the twelve apostles; visiting the interior we will be amazed by the aisles decorated in white and polychrome marble and by the frescoes of the Old and New Testament.

The guided tour ends by walking along Corso Umberto I, the main street of Modica Bassa where the Cathedral of S. Pietro is located and the best shops selling typical products; you will see many flavors of chocolate, of which there is also a museum on the same street, which has made Modica famous all over the world
