The guided tour in Taranto will introduce you to one of the most captivating towns in Magna Graecia, also one of the most significant in Italy, thanks to its Navy, maritime arsenal, monuments, and the MarTa Archaeological Museum—a prominent destination among Italy’s finest, explored with dedicated guide service.
The tour begins at Piazza Castello square, the focal point of major monuments. Here, we’ll visit the ruins of the Doric Temple of Poseidon, dating back to the 6th century B.C., with two Doric columns bearing witness to the ancient Magna-Greek temple. The journey continues with a visit to the Aragonese Castle, inside of which the Navy resides. The first tower, built by the Byzantines in the eleventh century, expanded over the centuries to its current conformation.
In close proximity to the castle, we’ll explore the revolving bridge—a symbol of Taranto—connecting the island of Borgo Antico with the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. Inaugurated in 1887, this approximately 90-meter-long bridge spans a navigable canal uniting the two seas: Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Cathedral of San Cataldo, likely the oldest in Puglia. Initially built by the Byzantines in the second half of the tenth century, it underwent remodeling with a Baroque façade in the mid-1700s, housing the Chapel of St. Cataldo.
