Tour Description: The guided tour of Sirmione will take you on a stroll through its historic center, revealing many curiosities, significant monuments, and panoramic views of the beaches facing the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda in the Lombard stretch. The journey begins at one of Sirmione’s most evocative and characteristic points, crossing the drawbridge leading to the imposing Scaligero Castle—the sole access point to the city’s historic center.
Built in the 14th century by the Scala family, rulers of nearby Verona, the castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Italy, surrounded on all four sides by the waters of the lake. It is an architectural gem with merlons overlooking the picturesque fortified Darsena and the colorful fishing boats. Moving through the fortress, we continue with the visit to the Church of S. Maria della Neve or Santa Maria Maggiore, the city’s main church built in the 15th century. Inside, it houses valuable paintings and a wooden statue of the Madonna Enthroned from the same period. We stroll through the alleys of the village characterized by colorful houses and many souvenir shops, boutiques, bars, and restaurants where you can taste the lake’s delicacies, eventually reaching the most frequented thermal center on Lake Garda, which we will visit from the outside. Sirmione is well-known for its Thermal Baths dating back to the late 19th century, fed by a warm-water spring that flows directly from the lake’s bottom, offering benefits for the entire body.
The tour continues to a building dear to the locals, a stately villa renamed Casa di Maria Callas, where the opera queen spent her holidays in the 1950s, expressing her love for this lakeside village due to the peace and tranquility it offered. A short walk away, we find the park dedicated to her and the characteristic Church of San Pietro in Mavino, dating back to the 14th century in Romanesque style, erected in one of the highest and most panoramic points of the village. From here, we can admire one of the most frequented beaches by tourists, the Jamaica Beach, a unique stone-free beach that, reflecting in the azure waters, truly resembles a tropical beach. On the other side of the village, we can admire Lido delle Bionde, another popular beach with a beautiful pier that provides an even more immersive view of the lake. We conclude the guided tour by traversing the panoramic pedestrian path called the Walk of the Muses, leading us back to the heart of the village.
