The guided tour of Reggio Emilia, known above all for its Parmigiano Reggiano, will take you to discover its elegant historic center with squares, alleys and churches that house true masterpieces of Italian art. We start with a visit to the Basilica della Ghiara, a small museum which is one of the jewels of the city, built in the 16th century and where the miraculous image of the Madonna is venerated.
The beauty of this church is reflected in the amazement of visitors when admiring the details of the ceiling, the splendid cloister and Guercino’s painting “The Crucifixion of Christ”, a true masterpiece of art. From here we head towards Piazza Grande which contains the religious and political power of Reggio Emilia with the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Palazzo del Comune, the Bordello Tower and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà with the Clock Tower.
We visit the Cathedral rebuilt in the 16th century and with its characteristic unfinished façade with the tower in the center with the statue of the Madonna and Child;
inside the Fiordibelli Chapel with a painting by Guercino. Next to the Cathedral we discover the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the Renaissance façade, the baptismal font and the fresco of the Baptism of Christ.
The guided tour continues along the historic Vicolo Broletto from the end of the 15th century with its porticoes and typical shops, where we arrive at the Palazzo del Comune which houses the Tricolore Museum with documents and relics of the Italian flag to which the Sala del Tricolore is annexed where it is
the historic flag which has become the national tricolor since 1848 was displayed. A few steps away we visit the beautiful Basilica of S. Prospero which houses the remains of the patron saint of Reggio Emilia with statues of the Saints and six large red marble lions in the churchyard. Inside it houses one of the most beautiful fresco cycles in Italy, the Last Judgment by the painter Procaccini. Walking through the alleys of the historic centre, we move to the area dedicated to the 3 theatres: the Valli Theatre, where the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti made his debut, with an elegant Doric portico with twelve columns and the tricolor fountain.
