The visit starts from the main entrance of the Visconti Castle, an important building with two front towers commissioned by Galeazzo II Visconti in 1360, surrounded by its garden and with the splendid moat that frames it. More than a fortress, it was the splendid seat of a refined court transferred by the Visconti from Milan, with large external mullioned windows, a splendid central courtyard and frescoed rooms in Gothic style.
The Castle of Pavia houses the Civic Museums that we will visit starting from the archaeological section full of rare finds from some ancient churches of the city and continuing towards the Romanesque and Renaissance section where you can admire precious statues, capitals, sculptures and mosaics.
On the second floor we find the Malaspina Art Gallery, the masterpieces of great Italian and foreign artists: Tiepolo to Antonello da Messina, Correggio and Francesco Heyez. A real jewel kept in the tower room is the wooden model of the Cathedral of Pavia, one of the most grandiose Renaissance wooden models still preserved, created by Giovan Pietro Fugazza starting from 1497. The visit ends with the court library, the picture gallery and the walk through the loggia that surrounds the central courtyard full of medieval-style frescoes.
