The Oplontis Villa is situated within the modern city of Torre Annunziata, approximately three kilometers from ancient Pompeii. Named after Nero’s wife, Villa Poppaea boasts about ninety rooms and preserves some of the most extraordinary frescoes in the Vesuvian area. The guided tour begins in the northern garden, progresses through the spa area, and covers all the southern areas with striking frescoes in II and III styles.
A lengthy portico leads to the patronal and servile atrium, adjacent to perfectly preserved latrines. Through a wide and long corridor, you’ll pass to the eastern peristyle surrounded by finely decorated rooms. In the center of this peristyle lies a massive swimming pool, bordered by bronze and marble statues.
The villa’s structure encompasses about 90 rooms, including various gardens, halls, corridors, an inner spa district, a triclinium communicating with the kitchen, rest areas, bathrooms for men and women, servile environments, a peristyle with a fountain, and a colossal 70-meter swimming pool. Representative rooms overlooking the pool feature frescoes that likely blended with planted elements. Notable among the refined and sumptuous pictorial decorations are those in the Tuscan-style atrium, the still lifes showcasing the famous wicker basket with figs, and the sanctuary of Apollo
