Think you’ve seen it all after visiting the Archaeological Museum of Naples? Think again! The MarTa Archaeological Museum in Taranto will not only amaze you but also leave you breathless with its extensive exhibition dedicated to Apulian Greco-Roman artifacts. The display is meticulously arranged, showcasing marble sculptures, monumental tombs, soft stone sculptures, necropolis pottery, and mesmerizing goldsmith works.
The guided tour will lead you through rooms dedicated to Hellenistic-era marble sculptures, another room featuring sculptures, mosaics, and epigraphs from both public and private structures, including the Roman period carparo stone heads. You’ll then explore rooms dedicated to necropolis pottery, showcasing pink clay vases with black figures depicting characters and scenes from mythology and athletics.
The highlight of the museum is the renowned “Ori of Taranto” (Golds of Taranto), which, in reality, are mostly from the town of Canosa di Puglia. This extraordinary collection includes objects of exceptional craftsmanship from Magna Graecia, such as the diadem and silver case of Princess Opaka Sabaleidas of Canosa.
The tour concludes with a visit to the baths and villas’ mosaics of Roman patricians, terracotta tools, and the impressive numismatic collection.
