Located 20 km south of Lecce, Galatina unveils an artistic splendor started in the fourteenth century with the Orsini del Balzo family. The tour will lead to the discovery of real jewels, starting with the Basilica of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, a treasure chest that houses magnificent frescoes commissioned by Princess Maria d’Enghien who in the fifteenth century called the best artists of Naples to realize valuable painting cycles comparable to those of Assisi.
The Basilica blends more architectural styles, from Romanesque to Gothic, from Norman to Byzantine and also includes an elegant cloister with eighteenth-century frescoes, the museum with an arabesque ceiling and a room dedicated to relics and votive offerings.
After admiring the Basilica, the tour continues with the church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Orsini palace and the pretty old town.
