The tour in the historic center of Bovino will take you to discover one of the most beautiful villages in Puglia and among the 100 most beautiful in Italy. We will visit the church of San Pietro, probably built on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to Hercules. The tour will continue with the municipal gardens and the Civic Museum Carlo Gaetano Nicastro, historical local and honorary inspector for works of antiquity and art.
It is an important archaeological museum, inaugurated in 1925, set up inside Palazzo Pisani, in the heart of the historic center and collects a series of archaeological finds from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. From amphorae to bowls, from axes to oil lamps, from eighteenth-century majolica to stone artefacts.
Following will visit the Cathedral, built in the tenth century. It has a paleochristian basilica form with three naves, a Romanesque facade with gothic elements on the portals. On the right you will also visit the church of San Marco di Eca of 1197, with a Romanesque-Byzantine portal.
The tour ends with the symbol of the village, its ducal palace – castle of the dukes of Guevara.
The structure has Roman origins but was later rebuilt before the Normans until it reached the Spanish de Guevara family. Its symbol is the circular tower lying on the troncopiramid barbican. Behind it, the Cassero is what remains of the residence of the lieutenant of the army of Frederick II of Swabia. Under the domination of the De Guevara the Castle was enlarged with the creation of a clock tower from the 1700s and an elegant hanging garden.
Today it is a richly furnished b & b.
